We are starting the second semester at Matthew Whaley with twelve volunteers. Four are new this year: Carolyn Lodzieski – first grade; Ann Shulte – art; Patti Bozeman – second grade; and Cheryl Hardick – first grade.
An unfortunate choice of a new K-5 literacy curriculum is hindering planning and implementation for faculty. Complications include a heavy vocabulary load and objectives exceeding the intended grade level. It has been noted that the new curriculum from a New York company does not align with the required Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs).
We are still looking for additional volunteers. Please apply through mywpc.org/tutor or contact Linda Eaton. This is an activity that returns more to you than you give. You’ll see the smiles, feel happy hugs, and tugs on your heart.
Note: Pictures above show second grade students Zaelynn and Angel modeling firefighters hats brought to a class presentation by firemen from Langley Air Force Base.
