WPC Tutoring Outreach Program Update

May 24, 2024

Spring has been exciting and eventful for the tutoring program at Matthew Whaley Elementary School. There have been two field trips – one to the Virginia Living Museum in Newport News and another to the Jamestown Settlement. The students get exposed to beautiful and interesting animals and historical artifacts. It is great to see them ask so many questions.

We have three new volunteers that started within the last 3-4 weeks: Mary Beach and Renee Howard in Second Grade, and Sarah Webb and Janet Hoffman in First Grade with Kimberly Freemont. We also have two others who will begin in the fall: Carolyn Lodzieski and Patty Yuzcic. That gives us ten volunteers who are currently working with students at Matthew Whaley. One calendar year ago there were three of us. Terrific support – Thank you, Thank you!!

We will be sending out a survey to evaluate the volunteer and teacher experience with tutoring in May as well as taking the opportunity to gift our teachers with floral appreciation. We will take an evening to celebrate our WPC Volunteers. I was humbled to receive the volunteer of the year award for Matthew Whaley – we were acknowledged at the May 16 WJCC school board meeting.

Summer school awaits!
