Who is Williamsburg Presbyterian Church (WPC)?

The purpose of the Church can be summed up by the Great Ends of the Church:

  • the proclamation of the gospel for the salvation of humankind;
  • the shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship of the children of God;
  • the maintenance of divine worship;
  • the preservation of the truth;
  • the promotion of social righteousness; and
  • the exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the world.

Specifically WPC gathers in the name of Jesus Christ to worship God and by the power of the Holy Spirit do God’s work in the world.

Our vision is: In response to God’s love for all humankind as shown in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the people of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church:

  • Worship and glorify God
  • Witness our faith in Jesus Christ
  • Welcome all people joyfully
  • Engage one another in ministries that nurture and challenge our faith and enable us to minister in a changing community and world
  • Open ourselves to new understandings of our relationships with God and one another
  • Share our faith, gifts and talents with our brothers and sisters in Williamsburg and throughout the world

What denomination does WPC belong to?

WPC is a member of the Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA), a nationwide denomination with more than two million members.

How is the church governed?

Presbyterian Churches are governed by a body of Elders known as the Session.

The congregation elects and ordains both women and men to serve three-year terms of active service as an elder or a deacon. Elders are responsible for the spiritual well-being and overall governance of the congregation.  Deacons are responsible for care and support of members of the congregation.

What sacraments do you celebrate?

We celebrate two sacraments as Presbyterians, baptism and communion, both of which are understood to be communal in nature.

In the sacrament of baptism, the individual is welcomed into the church and into the community of those who accept God's love. The congregation’s ongoing responsibility is to support the Christian life of the baptized individual, thus they become part of the greater community of members who put their faith and trust in Jesus.

In the sacrament of communion, which is often called The Lord's Supper, we recall the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and believe that He is truly with us in love and in power as we take the bread and the cup in faith and trust.

We would like to use your church. How can we do that?

Facility Use Requests

To initiate a request for facility use (i.e., the Sanctuary, Stevenson Fellowship Hall, etc.) refer to our Facility Use Policy, Guidelines and Request Forms. Upon receipt of a completed Request Form, WPC will determine (1) whether its Facilities Use Policy permits use by the requesting organization and for the proposed event, (2) whether the requested date(s) is available, and (3) whether any special requests can be accommodated. A request for use of WPC facilities has not been approved until it has been agreed to and signed by both the requesting organization and WPC.

Weddings

Williamsburg Presbyterian Church welcomes couples who have a family relationship with our church, and covenant to enter into a Christian marriage relationship, to be married at our church. The wedding ceremony is a Christian worship service that is different from a civil ceremony at a country club or Justice of the Peace office. We have prepared a policy to help you, and our church, make your wedding experience one of fond memories. We encourage you to click here for more information.

Funerals and Memorials

“In life and in death, we belong to God.”  No one knows exactly when, but we all know a day will come in the future when someone you love will have to plan your funeral or memorial service.  One of the most meaningful gifts we can leave is a record of our preferences for that important worship service.  Below is a resource you may use as your guide in this process.  You can print a copy to be put with your will or you could leave it with us at the church where the pastor can use it when they sit down with your loved one.
